A lifelong devotee to fashion creation, Manix Wong first began his dream of designing clothes for men by enrolling in Fashion Design at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. As a student he displayed remarkable talent by winning his first major award at 1993’s Smirnoff International Fashion Awards. His eye for theatrical pageantry, manifest through a memorable menswear collection cogently ornamented with 7-inch platform shoes, birdcages, pillows and grand wigs, captivated audiences and critics alike.
In 1994, Wong attended London's most prestigious fashion school, Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, which has nurtured some of the most prominent fashion designers like John Galliano, Alexander Mcqueen and Stella Mccartney. He embarked on a menswear master degree. Subsequently, Wong presented his collection with unconventional silhouettes, suits with embellished shoulders in fine wool and Oxford-wide-legs knee-length trousers, golden embroideries on clean white shirts – in stark contrast to the conventional waif London look.
Since graduating, Wong has worked for avant-garde designer Hussein Chalayan, where he sank his teeth by learning everything possible about high-tech and contemporary cutting. In Paris, he complemented his industry know-how at fashion brand Jose Levy.
In 2004, Wong launched LACLOS, a fashion brand inspired by the author of “Dangerous Liaisons”- Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. LACLOS’ conspicuous debut was made with a unique collection of 18g-fine-guauge knitwear in 100% cashmere. LACLOS collections are sold at internationally renowned department stores such as le Bon Marche and Le 66 in Paris, TSUM and GUM in Moscow and others across Japan.
In 2006, LACLOS won the best menswear prize of PARIS CAPITALE DE LA CREATION along with Pritzker-winning architect Jean Nouvel. In the same year, LACLOS was invited by Germany’s Galleries Lafayette to sell and showcase its collection in its coveted window display. Two years later, LACLOS was conferred best menswear award by Premium Young Designers Awards in Berlin.
